What Michigan requires
Michigan sets a short list of requirements for a legal marriage. I check each one when I arrive, before the ceremony begins.
- A marriage license
- Michigan residents apply at the clerk in their county of residence and may then marry anywhere in the state. Bring the license to the ceremony.
- Two witnesses
- Michigan law requires at least two witnesses besides the officiant. Bring two adults with you.
- Valid photo IDs
- Each of you brings a photo ID. I confirm your IDs match the names on your license.
- The waiting period
- Counties apply a 3-day waiting period after you apply. In Midland County, you pick up your license 3 days after applying and have 30 days from then to marry. Midland County requires the full 3-day wait. Bay County can shorten the wait for $100 with a valid reason. Other counties may differ, so confirm with your county clerk.
- Your declaration
- You each declare, in front of me and your witnesses, that you take each other in marriage. Two "I do" answers and a pronouncement meet the requirement.
